During Your Internship

Congratulations, you got the offer to intern at an accounting firm!

 

Although this is a huge step in your career as a future CPA, there is still a long way to go. During your internship, you should utilize the resources given to you, and should establish that you are a capable team player.

 

• Do NOT go on social media websites on your work computer or on your phone during working times (breaks and lunch are ok). It is a clear sign that you are not able to concentrate.

• Don't be afriad to ask questions. As an intern, you are supposed to not know the majority of what is going on. This is the perfect time for you to learn about the company you are auditing, why the team does what it does, and what being a partner is like.

• Say yes to every opportunity: during the Summer internships, there are less opportunities to showcase your abilities. If an assignment is looked down on for being busy work by other interns, be the first to say yes.

• Do not drink excessively. It is looked down upon, and could cost you your job.

• If you are not given opportunities, ask for them! Ask to shadow a partner, or your manager or director. This might be one of your only chances to do so.

• On the first and last day, bring a gift (food) for your coworkers. They will really appreciate the gesture.

• Say thank you, always. It goes a long way.

• Do your best work.
